Ocotillo & Century Plant
A restful winter desert image, the Ocotillo
(Fouquieria splendens) (on left), after a rain, greens
up with small leaves and produces bright red, flame-
like flowers at branch tips. The Century Plant (Agave
Parryi) (on right) blooms once after many years and
dies. Indians used this plant for food, beverages,
fiber, soap, medicine, and lances. One species is
used in making tequila.
